Livonia Family Dental supports the guideline of having a checkup exam and teeth cleaning every three months; that schedule will keep harmful tarter from building up on your teeth and gums, causing gingivitis or periodontal disease. If you go too long with a cleaning, our usual maintenance procedure may not be enough.

In cases where the patient has a great deal of tartar buildup, or tartar below the gum line, we may need to do a deep cleaning. This can also include root planing and scaling, depending on the severity of the problem.

With root planing and scaling, also referred to as “periodontal therapy,” we can remove all of the hard tartar and even the softer plaque from your tooth surfaces, all the way to the root. This procedure can help you keep your natural teeth by providing a means for treating severe periodontal disease.

If it’s been a long time since your last cleaning, we may need to spread your deep cleaning over two or more appointments. That will help us minimize any discomfort, and also keep you from having your entire mouth numbed with anesthetic.

If you’re not sure about deep cleaning for your teeth, make sure you ask us during your next checkup exam. We’ll have your teeth sparkling in no time!
