Tooth whitening is one of the most common cosmetic dental procedures performed in the United States, likely because it’s a quick, easy and inexpensive way to dramatically improve the brightness of your smile.

Livonia Family Dental uses the Opalescence Whitening System with in-office procedures and at-home after care convenience. This system works best for those patients who do not have tooth sensitivity or extensive bonding, veneers or other restorative appliances.

Tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, and any visible bonding or composite fillings may need to be replaced to match your new, whiter tooth color. Likewise, we do not recommend using tooth whitening products to nursing or expectant mothers simply because we don’t have any conclusive evidence of the product’s effect on unborn or newborn babies.

We don’t recommend the use of over-the-counter whitening kits, mainly because they’re just not as effective as more professional procedures. Cheaper kits only remove surface stains and won’t last nearly as long, making them a less cost-effective option in the long run.

Ask your Livonia family dentist for more information on tooth whitening or an evaluation of your cosmetic dentistry options.
